Healthy Aging: Senescence

Senescence is a cellular state where damaged cells resist removal by apoptosis, linger and harm normal cells. These senescent cells are unique in that they eventually stop multiplying but do not die off when they should. They remain and continue to release chemicals that can trigger inflammation. Not all senescent cells are bad.

However, the number of senescent cells in your body increases with age. As your aging immune system becomes less efficient, senescent cells accumulate and taint healthy cells. This affects your ability to withstand stress and illness, recuperate from injuries, and prevent age-related conditions.
